Playing in the Dark:
Whiteness and the
Literary Imagination

from this photo—
i want to make a poem
into a stage presence
with some sex in it

some oo-we-baby—
and trembling thighs,
some tongue with it
dancing in & out

some oo-la-la in it—
from this guy I knew
a nightfall of orgasms
my audience knows who

you come back to me—
a nightful of me reaching
up to taste your forbidden
sweet grapes of wrath

holding it up there—
holding yourself above me
holding your heart away
from me wanting you

letting my hands reach—
wanting to give you head
holding yourself aloof tho
from this whitey fag kid

a nightful of sixties—
short-stoking yourself
your sperm-seed ready
but surely not for me

you move thru campus—
the hallways of allen hall
your exquisite dark skin
your all too knowing look

glowing radioactive—
moving thru a forest of desire
your calypso hips testify
your zydeco rhythmic thighs

the rhythm of the bible—
louisiana boyfriend hallelujah
rod of aaron seed of abraham
between your bowed legs

poetry preacher-man kid—
university lover jazzy cute
poetry your gospel now
delta journal blues

peal me a grape—
you tell me holding them
way up above my head
lubricating LSU with K-Y

I want to resurrect you—
my dead lazarus boyfriend
the first time I got you
in the allen hall tea room

oh Ahmos ZuBolton—
oh lordy, lordy my baby boy
let them all know now I
went down on black moses
